multinational corporations and capital

The new question for democracy, one might say, is: Who elected George Soros? Or IBM-Siemens-Toshiba? if the nation-state will not defend the economic well-being of its own citizens or can no longer use military power for that purpose, then what exactly is it for? Americans and their allies surely did not win the cold war in order to cede sovereignty over national economic policy to motorola and daimler-benz, toyota and goldman sachs. As global firms elaborate their own partnerships, sharing production and markets, the question of concentrated power will intensify the crisis for nations and domestic political leaders. The reactionary impulse to withdraw from the world- to defend the homeland against the future-is certain to grow stronger and perhaps quit dangerous.
